I have always been attracted to bright and bold colors. I look for beads that have interesting shapes or textures. I combine these features to create designs that are unique, fun and playful. I create pieces that express my mood and character. I do not stick to one particular style or design, as I like to experiment with combining different materials, as well as patterns. The result is versatile jewelry that can be worn for any occasion.
I hand-craft all the jewelry, including bracelets, earrings and necklaces. I also create hair accessories in the form of barrettes and bobby pins. I use a variety of materials, including crystal, glass, pearls, seed beads, semi-precious stones, and silver and gold accents.

The play of color, texture and light has always enchanted me. Naturally, the landscapes of the Arnold Arboretum are very inspiring. Prairie designs and Quilting in Glass are also intriguing to me because there are so many possibilities for color and shape combinations. And for the last 3 years, I've been making stained glass pet portraits and have gotten very positive responses. ("This couldn't be any other dog but Bo!" - owner of Gifted).
My artwork is always on display at Select Cafe in Roslindale, Cakes in Milton, Gifted in the South End and Cause to Pause in Brookline. I can make anything you want in stained glass. My most recent custom design work is displayed on our website.
I will gladly custom design your photos or we can work together to create your own vision. And now, there are so many new fascinating glass colors and textures available. Email me and we can discuss your ideas.

The passions that inspire me to design and create jewelry include my love of colors and textures. I love to see the sparkle and spark in natural materials. My earthy, funky, and glittery work includes Swarovski crystal, sterling silver, pearl, glass and semi-precious stones that are natural treasures manipulated and beautified by people. Starting from raw materials each with inherent beauty, working to create each unique whole piece with love, openness to possibilities not immediately evident, mindfulness and patience is a parallel process to the work of psychotherapy which I do as my day job.

I've had a love for digital photography ever since I got my first digital camera in February of 1999. I enjoy shooting a very wide variety of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, animals, architecture, homes & interiors, trees/plants/flowers, and abstract subjects. I've shot everything from cows to roller coasters, from coast to coast. I am especially inspired by colored lights (especially carnivals & fairs), unusual angles, vivid colors, extreme close-ups, and candid portraits. All my work is self-taught.
For the past 2 years, I've been experimenting with HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, which blends a range of exposures into a single image, for a sometimes surreal effect, where every aspect of the photo is perfectly exposed, with no blown-out highlights or over-darkened shadows. Nearly everywhere I go, I'm constantly scouting out my next subject. I also do all my own printing, matting, and framing.
For equipment, I've used point-and-shoot cameras by Kodak, Casio, Nikon, and Sony, ranging from 3 to 9 megapixels. A good portion of my work was done with Apple's iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, using PRO HDR software. It's been said that "the best camera is the one you have with you". I live by that rule every day. I've always used a Mac for the importing, organizing, editing, and sharing of my photos.

My sculptures are rough and powerful yet they give an illusion of simplicity. The dominant aspect of my work is its straightforward form – an aspect that makes these pieces very friendly to the viewer. The forms are easy to approach, but the symbolism and deeper meaning subtly develop over time. I create objects with volume and openness using carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, and almost any other material I can find. With found materials, I like to push the material to the point where many viewers do not realize what the original material was. The void of the volume and the play of light and shadow on the structure of my pieces create a sensual experience when viewed from various angles. The master finishes and patina enhance the texture.
I graduated with a BA in sculpture. I am represented by L'attitude Gallery, Newbury Street, Boston, MA and Gallery North, Carmel, CA.

Through my paintings, I synthesize the long tradition of classical realist painting with the inspiration of the relatively new medium of photography. Drawing on the skills from my previous photography work I utilize the camera to create intimate “portraits” of my still-life subjects. The pre-painting photographic study offers a specific way of observing and capturing a subject. I then proceed to use classical painting techniques to take advantage of paint’s unique qualities of luminosity, texture and blending. My objective is to develop these paintings until they express an emotive experience unique to the subject and the medium of oil paint.

As a designer, I follow a process, a set of rules if you will, when given
the charge to create built environment from my imagination. I start with
a concept, which develops into detailed drawings, three-dimensional
renderings and models, and eventually takes shape as a tangible object. I consider proportions, massing, composition, context, and how one might interact with my creation. I approach photography in the same way. When I encounter a scenario that interests me I begin to consciously develop my concept. I ask myself, what is the best angle (proportions and massing), composition (symmetry or asymmetry), context (what to capture in the frame), and most importantly, how one might interact with my creation. I look for spontaneous composition in both built form and in nature. The interplay of light and shadow and the distortion of scale and color add to the abstract reality portrayed in many of my photographs.
Most often I do not have my camera with me when discovering a subject to photograph, enabling me to contemplate the design process. I shoot my photographs with Nikon’s d70s and d90 digital SLR cameras and process them with Apple Aperture, iphone and Adobe Photoshop.

Sometimes figurative, often a blend of dreamscape and abstraction, my work houses hidden comedy and satire as a reflection of my notions about the world. The finished works often look as though they should be part of a narrative, yet the overall story remains illusive, unclear and mysterious. Ultimately my paintings are not meant to make sense, but to create a feeling of disorientation, puzzlement, and amusement. I want the viewer to be able to look with fascination over long periods of time. Something new should be seen with each encounter with the image. Part of my enjoyment of the finished product comes from the stories made up by the viewer as they wonder out loud what is going on in the work. Laughter at the discovery of some small, quirky element is always a good sign!

We have been making, exhibiting and selling our work for the past three years, and have participated in numerous art ventures across Massachusetts, including, Newton Harvest Fair, Oktoberfest in Harvard Square, The International School of Boston Boutique, and The Arsenal Center for the Arts, but find Open Studios to be the most rewarding. The positive feedback from attendees, as well as the interaction and encouragement from other artists, has been a truly wonderful experience.
We are thrilled to participate in Roslindale Open Studios, again, this year, as a way to support the arts, and as a creative outlet for what has become a very happy addiction!

I took my first pottery class about 15 years ago at a community art center. In 2002 I walked out of Hamilton College with a studio art degree in ceramics. After various apprenticeships, teaching jobs, and studio manager positions, I am now able to concentrate on what I do best: making pots.
The smell of the clay and the way the light reflects in the bucket of water I dip my hands into reminds me of afternoons spent by the river. I love the rhythm of throwing. The way the time can be measured in pots thrown, or handles pulled. I love using my whole self to make pottery.
There is a pleasant ache to my muscles after a long day, but potting also requires keeping my mind busy solving the next glaze chemistry puzzle, and my eye designing the harmonious curve of the next piece to come off the wheel. All of my pottery is microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe. The glazes are food safe and lead free.

My interest in photography began during my architectural studies in college. The need to photograph conceptual and final design models introduced me to technical aspects of lighting, composition and the basics of macro photography.
While in school I took a photography class that involved developing black and white film. Shooting exclusively in black and white, I learned to find subjects with a wide range of contrast and strong textures. Over time I have gradually transitioned to digital photography. My work as a technical graphic designer has provided me experience in Photoshop in addition to knowledge of color management principles and color correction techniques, which are useful when working in the “digital darkroom”.

I am a non-profit do-gooder by day, budding artist and entrepreneur by night and on weekends. I bought my first digital camera in 2008 as I prepared to adopt a child from Ethiopia; it seemed to me you couldn't be a parent - especially a first-time parent - without a camera! But during the wait to bring my child home, I discovered a creative passion I never knew I had. Since then, I have taught myself to shoot, print, mat, and frame my own photos, and have started a small business to sell them (and build up the kid's college fund!). I am drawn to the vibrant colors of nature, the surprise of ordinary objects viewed up close, and the grit and grandeur of urban landscapes. Every image inspires me in some way, and it is my hope that they inspire you as well.

My work is inspired by an obsession with collecting all manner of natural and man-made cast-offs. I bring these items into my studio and place them alongside previous finds in a continually rotating Wunderkammer of treasures that provides the raw materials and inspiration for these assemblages. Like the iconic works of Joseph Cornell and Robert Rauschenberg, my work combines disparate elements in an attempt to reveal underlying relationships and suggest narratives through unexpected juxtapositions.
While my collecting is intuitively based, I gravitate towards objects exhibiting characteristics of natural and unnatural histories. An example of the former may be a bird nest blown from a tree; while a fragment of rusted metal embodies the latter. My work is a celebration of decay, accretion and the detritus of the natural world and is a response to our culture’s inexorable pursuit of sleek and shiny new objects. By combining materials considered worthless with others more precious, it is my aim to glorify the beauty I find within each.

My work is created in an online application called Peacock. I enjoy
exploring the edges where human and computer abilities meet and I feel
most satisfaction when I can do a piece that clearly is generated on a
computer but that shows equally the human input. I hope to create images that could not have been made solely by computer and that I could not have done on my own.
I use the restrictions imposed by my tools to build up "paintings"
....paintings without paint. Some of my work is directly inspired by poetry and juxtapose my paintings with texts poets such as Yeats, Dylan Thomas, and Cavafy. I have no training as an artist and my exploration
of digital art evolves from experiences in the virtual reality world of Second Life. I have several galleries of kinetic virtual sculpture in that environment. Unfortunately they can only be seen there as the technology for displaying them outside that venue does not yet exist. In real life my works are presented as archival quality photographic prints.

In 2006, Koeppel was again awarded Viewers Choice, as well as Third Prize in the juried selection. He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work as a commercial illustrator informs the unified composition of his landscape paintings. His work has appeared in galleries, museums and art shows in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and Connecticut.
“My locations and inspiration range from around the neighborhood to Cape Cod and points north. In addition to Plein Air painting on location I have recently started working on larger pieces in my studio; this controlled environment allows me the luxury of time to work larger and push the image in a different, compelling direction.”

For almost 20 yrs now, photography and traveling have been an important part of Sean's life. As a boy, traveling came in the form of family vacations and Boy Scout camping trips. Now, he photographs to travel and travels to photograph. Travel isn't about just going to a particular place-- it is the act of going.
There is poem by Robert Lewis Stevenson on the floor of the Providence, RI train station that explains it best:
I travel for travels sake,
The great affair is to move,
For my part, Travel not to go anywhere,
But to Go.
Landscapes are Sean's favorite style of photography. Growing up in a rural community in central Pennsylvania, The landscape of every new place he visits gets contrasted in his mind with that of Halifax, Pennsylvania. Now that he lives in Boston, he's photographing the small landscapes in a large city. This also means he's started experimenting with shooting buildings in the same way as landscapes.

It all starts with color and light—evocative, beautiful, intriguing. The play of light over form—whether in still life, landscape, or figure, moves me to paint and create works that I hope will inspire and interest others as I’ve been inspired. In my figurative work, I’m captivated by the beauty and personality of each person who is my subject and this is what I set out to express. As I gaze at my subject, I form a relationship with him, her, or it, where something emerges—an idea, a feeling that the person projects or perhaps I project, or the relationships between objects in a still life or landscape, and it is these emergent ideas, feelings, or relationships that become the theme, that define, and that shape each work. And then always back to the sheer delight of color and light.
My artistic formation has been at the Museum School, MassArt, and through the tutelage and mentorship of Cape Cod School of Art and portraitists Cedric and Joanette Egeli. I’ve shown my work in shows in Boston and Cape Cod and am represented by the Thanassi Gallery in Provincetown, MA.

The complexity of my artistic creativity takes simple materials and forms and creates multilayered expressions in clay. A majority of my work is intended to evoke an impressionistic vision of space.
I have developed throwing and glazing techniques that result in very textural surfaces. The processes I use to apply glaze effect great depth and variation in color. I have perfected a method which produces very cosmic patterns in the finished work. Most of the pieces I make are hand-thrown and high-fired so they can be used in the microwave and oven, and are dishwasher safe.

Fiber has always been a central figure in most that I make; from
needlework as a child to paper making and weaving as a young adult to the textile design and painting I do today. I find my inspiration comes in many forms but the thread in it all for me is rhythm. The rhythm of architecture, the rhythm of landscape and of plants. The obvious visual structure created by rhythm and the slight spontaneous variations are
what I strive to capture in my work.

Dr. Cheryl Levin is a clinical psychologist and urban photographer. Themes of her previous photography shows have included explorations of deterioration (both of the landscape and the human body). She photographs rust because of the detailed patterns, textures, and colors it reveals. Dr. Levin enjoys the way it proliferates with a striking beauty of its own. "Indirectly created by humanity it grows beyond our control," she says. "Sometimes I return to a rust site months or years later, to see how it has progressed, and then I photograph it again." Her Rust Series provides examples of her discoveries throughout New England, Florida and Europe.
Dr. Levin has exhibited at Alchemy Gallery, Boston City Hall, Goddard House, the Boston Home, as well as in many local businesses and restaurants. She participates regularly in art events such as Roslindale Open Studios and Jamaica Plain First Thursdays. Many of her photos, including four in the current rust series, have won prizes in local print competitions. She lives in Roslindale with her husband, writer and photographer Peter Bates, and their neurotic Siamese cat, Puccini.

My work is heavily influenced by the natural world, the atmosphere of the space we inhabit and how the internal space of our inner life relates to it. The process is spontaneous and intuitive, using line and the qualities of the paint itself. I try to let the paint have as much say in each piece’s evolution as I do. I recently heard an artist say that, in his experience, every painting is a failure, but that each one gives hope that in the next one you have the chance to get it right. I agree with this, as each work is an exploration of mystery and contains only a fragment of the whole, and as such is incomplete. The deeply satisfying gift is the making of the work, the process of gaining a greater understanding the materials, and my world, and finding what it is that I make with them.
Lauren G. Levine has been a resident of Jamaica Plain for the last 15 years. She attended Mass College of Art from 1992-1996 with a concentration in painting. She is currently a member of the JP Artists Association, a bodyworker, weaver, and shows her work in Jamaica Plain and the Boston area.

Black & White Photography |

Growing up in Worcester, MA, I used to think there was nothing in that city interesting enough to notice. But beginning with my first real camera in 1988, narrowing my view to a small square window actually opened up whole new fields of vision. I began seeing the world in black and white, a stark contrast to the overflow of color that surrounds us. Capturing those images and transferring them to paper became my first passion, and sharing my view of these pieces of the world became my second. Since then I have traveled all over the world, bringing new images to life in the darkroom, learning the technique and the art required to convey these pictures to others. Now I am privileged enough to be able to share them with you. Enjoy.

Wood Sculpture |
prmcintire@rcn.com |
Paul McIntire’s work moves in the open spaces between music and architecture, two fields in which he is formally trained. In his sculpture, he revels in the fluid abstractions of music as he answers to the functional demands of architecture. He uses progressive repetition to build structure and tension, and from this he explores the endless patterns of variety. His medium of choice is wood because it allows him to see his ideas quickly, and he delights in the way he can further transform his pieces with plaster and graphite pigments.
McIntire has been making sculpture for 18 years. His work has also been shown at several outdoor, site-specific exhibits which include the Boston Common, the Forest Hills Cemetery Contemporary Sculpture Path, The Art Complex Museum, and the Fuller Museum of Art. This is his first showing with Roslindale Open Studios.

Art was always encouraged for me growing up, and I had considered art school, but went for the practical career of dental hygiene. Years later, as my daughter left for college herself, I solved the empty nest syndrome with more attention to art. I have been fortunate to study with three wonderful local artists: Nancy Sargent Howell, Dotty Gunther, and Ellen McGill. My focus has been watercolors inspired by photos I take, nature I see.... some moment of light, color and composition that I hope to recreate. Recently, I have ventured into pastel art. I am also a member of Masscribes for calligraphers and helped to host the 30th International Conference for Lettering Artists at Stonehill College. Living in Roslindale, I am fortunate to be surrounded by countless other artists and a community that nurtures our efforts. All these activities enrich my life as a mother and grandmother. I am looking forward this, the sixth year of the ever-evolving Roslindale Open Studios! "Art around every corner!!"

I enjoy painting with watermedia for the movement, the glazes, and the unpredictability. Most recently, I have been painting works from my imagination. I start with undifferentiated washes and textural accidents. I then develop them into compositions based on imagined mingling of basic life forms.

The figure, and therefore the human condition, is the theme of my work. I construct narratives using a combination of painting and drawing styles. My color choices are not necessarily naturalistic. I work from models and usually don't begin with a specific theme. A story reveals itself to me as I work. Most compositions contain multiple figures. I often turn the canvas between poses so that figures overlap and bisect each other at disparate angles. The interim ambiguity and confusion inspires and challenges me to form a resolution.

“My artistic sensibility is a marriage between 50’s 60’s 70’s vintage colors, patterns, and textures, and late 1800’s early 1900’s Surreal /Post Modern /Minimalist schools of thought. I gravitate towards anything that evokes these certain aesthetics.
I work on several things at a time. I work the way an interior decorator thinks, when it comes to “composition”. It’s hard to know when enough is enough. I keep adding, subtracting, or layering, color, pattern, shapes, and textures, until something feels right, and therefore “done”. I’m currently in love with liquid acrylic paint, and my father made me several light weight wood panels. And voila! A reason to finish a series of new paintings is born! It’s really that simple sometimes.
There’s no intentional theme, meaning or emotion woven into my work. I operate intuitively, and strive to stay true to my style as my life evolves, and the mediums in which I work continue to change.
These artist statements are so tricky to compose because we all have patterns, habits, rituals, likes/dislikes, lists of interests etc… But as an artist, I just find it fascinating that no matter what, this work is the stuff that comes out of me. This is what my brain and hands want to make. And I have to just keep going, and practice, just like anyone else, to grow and get better at what I do.”
