I was trained as a photographer. I became interested in drawing with graphite because it enabled me to get my hands dirty, to derive my own solutions to representation while still being able to convey the silvery appearance of black and white photography. I draw on gessoed panel in order to facilitate a more direct connection between the viewer and the work than drawings in a frame, behind glass. I am interested in the interplay of light and the physical world. Through drawing I explore how abstract marks can elicit the perception of light and shadow, volume, atmosphere, figure and ground.
